Born in new zealand and raised in Australia, I have spent over 23 years living and studying in Japan. I am a resident of the beautiful amami oshima and have created this page to share the different things I do for a living.
I am a certified tour guide specializing in private adventure, culture, and Nature (including birdwatching) tours on Amami Oshima.
Beyond tour guiding, I am working on a book about kokuto shochu. I am a former distillery worker, having spent a number of years in kokuto shochu and a bit in imo shochu. Kokuto shochu is a regionally exclusive drop only made on the islands and I hope to share this amazing drop with the world.
I also do a little bit of filmography with my sony alpha, DJI drone, and GoPro 12. You can find some of my clips under the filmography tab. Before doing all of this, I worked as a translator for about 16 years...so I wear a few hats. On the topic of hats, I dabble with designs featuring my freehand scribbles. You can find some of my gear on this site, too.
My wife runs PORTSIDE, established in May 2024, creating one-of-a-kind items rooted in Amami craft and textiles.
Feel free to get in touch, and wherever your travels may take you, enjoy the journey.
